Viktor Yushchenko signs declaration dismissing Parliament

Ukraine's President, Viktor Yushchenko, has signed a declaration dismissing Ukraine's democratically elected Parliament.

The President has claimed that the formation of a constitutional Majority by the governing coalition is unconstitutional following 11 members of the opposition crossing the floor to support the government.

Members of the governing coalition have vowed to fight the Presidential decree claiming that the President has no authority under Ukraine's constitution to dismiss the elected Parliament and that his ruling will be challenged in the Courts .

The Government have indicated that they will continue to govern Ukraine in the absence of a ruling from the Constitutional Court.

The President had earlier requested a ruling from the Constitutional Court to clarify the President' authority and right to dismiss the parliament. The Court has yet to consider and rule on the President's request.

Under Ukraine's constitution an election must be held within 60 days following the dismissal of the Parliament.
